In the US, the first patent was awarded on 31 July 1790. Samuel Hopkins received the first patent for the manufacture of potash, an element used in fertilizers. The patent was signed by President George Washington. Hopkins was born in Vermont, but resided in Philadelphia, Pa., when the patent was granted.
